MEP Aura Salla Participated in a Panel Discussion at POLITICO’s AI & Tech Week

MEP Aura Salla participated this week in a panel discussion organized by POLITICO during AI & Tech Week in Brussels. The discussion focused on Europe’s readiness for the next phase of artificial intelligence and the EU’s position in the global AI race. Particular attention was given to Europe’s strategic competitiveness, the adequacy of AI regulation, and the impact of AI on democracy, labour markets, and transatlantic relations.

During the panel, Salla emphasized that Europe must strengthen its technological sovereignty and reduce strategic dependencies on non-European actors. According to Salla, cooperation with the United States in AI and technology policy must be based on reciprocity. She stressed that Europe should prioritize European companies, security, and resilience in public procurement and strategic investments.

Salla highlighted that data should be treated as a strategic asset comparable to intellectual property and critical raw materials. She also underlined the need for stronger European capabilities in cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, defence technology, and interoperable digital systems.

She also stressed that Europe must shift from regulation to deregulation and focus more strongly on innovation, investment, and scaling European technologies. Europe cannot afford to fall behind in the global AI race while other major powers rapidly expand their technological capabilities and strategic influence.

The panel brought together policymakers, technology experts, and industry leaders to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, Europe’s competitiveness, and the geopolitical implications of emerging technologies.
