Europe must end its dependence on Russian energy more rapidly than planned now. That is a question of resilience and security as well as competitiveness and security as well as competitiveness and common sense.
Tensions in the Middle East remind us of a wider lesson. When we depend on fossil fuels from unstable regions and limited suppliers, we make ourselves vulnerable to shocks we cannot control. This is not the first crisis, and it will not be the last.
Resilience means building an energy system that can withstand disruption. It means more domestic clean energy, including nuclear, stronger interconnections, better protected infrastructure, and markets that can adapt in times of crisis.
Europe must phase out Russian oil and gas, and at the same time reduce fossil fuel dependency more broadly. That is how we build real resilience, protect our competitiveness, and give Europeans more secure and affordable energy.
A combination of renewable energy and nuclear power is the winning ticket.
